New data from Statistics Canada shows that the wealth gap between Canada’s richest 20 percent and the poorest has nearly doubled between 1999 and 2012.
The figures show that all income groups saw an increase in their wealth, however the net worth of the richest surged by 80 percent in the 13 year period (from $721,900 to $1,300,100), while the poorest only saw growth of 38 percent (from $79,500 to $109,300).
The gap between the two grew by 85 percent from $642,400 in 1999 to $1,190,000 in 2012.
Middle-income households saw net worth grow 73 percent from $261,800 to $453,300.
