Homeowners in British Columbia and Alberta have the highest average mortgage debt according to StatsCan data.
Based on the most recent available figures, from 2012, BC households had an averaged $241,800 in mortgage debt, while Alberta followed behind with an average of $205,200. These numbers sych with the rising value of real estate assets.
Moving east, Ontario’s figure was $173,000 while the lowest average mortgage debt was New Brunswick at $83,000
